Elisabeth, and her siblings, have been members of Vanguard Gym/CrossFit Manassas since almost the beginning, 8 years. She trains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Thai Boxing and CrossFit. She is also an Assistant Instructor for our Kids Martial Arts program. Elisabeth is one of the friendliest, most helpful people I’ve ever met. Elisabeth also supports our Childcare Program and is willing to take on any task when needed.

Who are you?

I am the third of eleven children and a dual enrollment, home-schooled, high school student.

How did you get into Martial Arts and how has it changed things in your life?

I got into martial arts because my dad is in the military, and wanted his children to be able to defend themselves. When I was about six years old, he had me and my two older sisters start jiu-jitsu.

I would say doing martial arts has changed things in my life in numerous ways. Training martial arts at Vanguard has taught me to be respectful, disciplined, and have confidence in myself all while having fun.

What benefit do you see in the real world from your time at the gym and with your martial arts tribe?

Spending time at Vanguard Gym and with the people there has definitely been a huge confidence booster for me; everyone there is always trying to build each other up and help each other out. Also training helps to give me a lot personally; knowing what I can do in the gym gives me a lot more confidence in setting goals and high standards for myself in areas such as school and family.

Why does coming to class matter to you?

Coming to class is important to me because there are so many small details you are never going to get unless you stay committed.

What is your favorite movement/class/event? Why?

I would say my favorite class would be Jiu-Jitsu because it’s not about who’s the strongest or biggest. You can be half someone’s size, and still have an equal chance of beating them. I also enjoy how it uses every part of your body so you have to be thinking about everything all at once, trying to see the big picture but also the small details.

Why did you decide to help coach?

I wanted to start coaching for many reasons, one of them being because I love what I do and I want to help others with it, I want to give people what I have to offer. My goals as a coach are to bring the best I can out of everyone. I want to help the kids reach their goals and even exceed them, help them see how good they really are, and just have fun with everyone.

What caused you to try CrossFit?

I got into CrossFit because my two older sisters wanted to try it out so I went along with them. I actually wasn’t sure how much I would enjoy it but once I got there I loved it. CrossFit has greatly increased my physical boundaries and mental strength.

What benefits have you gained?

Doing CrossFit has helped me to focus more on my personal goals rather than the goals of those around me. That makes a huge difference when it comes to school, sports, and my family, since I have learned to focus more on myself than others.

What do you like about the community/coming to class?

Coming to class is important to me because if I want to get better, I need to stay committed. I also really enjoy going, since it is [a] fun and productive environment.

Favorite lift?

My favorite lift would be the bench press, because I like the simplicity, which makes it easier for me to focus.

Favorite movement?

My favorite exercise is handstand push-ups, because, like the bench press, it’s simple and you only have to focus on balance and upper body strength.
