“During the last couple years at Vanguard Gym, my health has been reborn. Since the fall of 2012, I have lost 50 pounds though a combination of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Vanguard, & healthier eating. At times now I smile to myself, wondering what the heck took me so long to make these changes.
Prior to this, my struggle with being overweight has been lifelong. Truthfully, it wasn’t much of a “struggle” because I was mostly indifferent to and just accepted carrying the extra pounds ever since I was a kid. I had exercised off & on for most my life, but remained about 30+ lbs overweight, so clearly pieces of the puzzle were missing. I had a rolodex of rationalizations: busy with job, busy with kids, love food too much, slow metabolism, runs in the family, other men my age were also overweight, as long I’m getting some exercise what’s the problem…. In 2012, my weight ballooned to just over 250 lbs and related health problems became more clear. Today, I weigh about 200 lbs and feel better than ever. People who knew me before/after ask how I made the change.
For me, the critical factors that all converged were my decision to change, having a goal and the tools to make the lifestyle changes, and having a support and accountability mechanism. Apart from my own personal will to lose and keep off the weight, the programs, people, and environment that Coach Doug has created at Vanguard perfectly complemented and reinforced my own attitude.”
